GRANGER, Ind. (WNDU) – The clubhouse at Juday Creek Golf Course in Granger is now a total loss after it went up in flames early Monday morning.
Firefighters were called to the golf course just before 6 a.m. after a passerby saw flames coming from the clubhouse. In fact, Clay Fire Chief Jaren Kilian believes the building was on fire for quite some time before crews even arrived.
Kilian says firefighters had to go on the defensive right away after quickly realizing the fire had already burned through the floor and was extending into the attic space overhead.
One of the challenges of fighting the fire was getting water.
“There’s been a lot of water that we’ve had to bring on site and shuttle water here because there just isn’t supplied water from a hydrant like you’d have in another municipality,” Kilian says.
Nobody was inside the building at the time of the fire. One firefighter suffered minor injuries but was treated at the scene and was able to go back to work.
Officials are still working to determine the cause and origin of the blaze.
The golf course is owned by state Sen. Linda Rogers and her husband, Mike. She tells WNDU 16 News Now they built it from the ground up in 1988.
“Lots of great memories,” Rogers says. “We’ve seen a lot of kids grow up here, so it’s just kind of devastating to watch.”
Roger says they plan to rebuild the clubhouse in the future. As for right now, guests will still be able to golf.
“We’ll have temporary headquarters soon, and so we can still have golf,” Rogers says. “Our online system for booking is still working. As far as if you have big events planned, that may be a little difficult, but we’re good at improvising and we’ll make things happen.”
