Just six strokes separate first and fourth place teams after the first day of competition at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A girls golf state championship at the Longleaf Golf & Family Club on Monday.
Lake Norman Charter leads the team race with a combined score of 256, but three other teams are within striking distance. South Point posted a score of 260, Southern Alamance finished the first round with a score of 261, and Stuart Cramer is fourth with a score of 262.
Even fifth place Croatan is just 15 strokes out of first place with a score of 271.
Seehe Veera, a freshman, led the way for Lake Norman Charter on the opening day. Veera posted an 11-over par 83, which puts her in a four-way tie for eighth place. Sophomore Caitlyn Frisch is one stroke behind her with an 84.
South Point’s top golfer on Monday was Madison Pruden, who is tied for second place with Laila Vongsavanh of Fred T. Foard with a score of 77 (+5).
Jacksonville senior Sanaa Carter has a comfortable lead in the individual standings after the first day. Carter recorded four birdies on the back nine en route to a 1-under par 71 finish. She will enter the final day of competition on Tuesday with a six-stroke lead.
Hibriten senior Trinity White is currently fourth with a score of 78, followed by McKenna WIlliams of Tuscola, Cristina Murphy of Carrboro, and Gabriella Mooreehad of Williams who are tied for fifth place with a score of 81.
The final day of the 3A state championship will take place on Tuesday at the Longleaf Golf & Family Club.
