It feels like the right time for the LA Clippers to move on from their injury-plagued, $149.5 million superstar, and the Detroit Pistons have surfaced as a convenient trade partner for LA.
The Clippers have looked far better than expected to start the season without Kawhi Leonard.
Sure, Ty Lue would like his club’s 6-6 record to be a game or two better, but overall, LA is playing good basketball to open up the Intuit Dome era.
The best surprise for the Clippers has been the emergence of Norman Powell. Powell is having a career year at 24.9 points per game and is shooting a blistering 49.5 percent from three through 12 games. He’s leading LA in scoring, which is saying a lot considering this is a team with James Harden on it.
Should the Clippers move on from Leonard and keep things rolling around Harden, Powell, and monstrous center Ivica Zubac?
Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey certainly thinks so. According to a new report released Friday, Bailey believes LA should part ways with Kawhi ASAP and that the Clippers could exploit the Pistons’ eagerness to improve in the short term by dangling Leonard in front of them.
Bailey proposed the following trade:
“Kawhi Leonard for Tobias Harris, Isaiah Stewart, Ron Holland and a 2030 first-round pick swap.”
“Tobias Harris and Tim Hardaway Jr. have helped a bit, but it’s clear that Detroit is still far from a lock for the playoffs,” Bailey said.
“An even moderately healthy Kawhi Leonard would bring them closer to that status.”
“Plugging his superstar upside into lineups with Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren would make Detroit a tough out for most Eastern Conference opponents.”
“For the Los Angeles Clippers, this is just about getting out of the Kawhi era as quickly and painlessly as possible.”
“They’ve been competitive without him in the lineup this season, and this trade turns his contract into multiple deals that are shorter and pay less per year. It also gives them an upside play with Ron Holland and the future pick swap.”
Should the Clippers give Detroit a call and put a Kawhi deal in motion?
