French referee Clément Turpin has been tasked to officiate the mouth-watering Champions League play-off round first leg between Manchester City and Real Madrid, UEFA has announced. Pep Guardiola’s struggling Skyblues take on Carlo Ancelotti’s Champions League winners this Tuesday at the Etihad Stadium. The 42-year-old has already overseen seven Champions League games involving Real Madrid, including the 2022 final against Liverpool FC at Saint-Denis’ Stade de France (1-0). Real Madrid have never lost a Champions League game with Turpin as the referee.
Manchester City v Real Madrid will be the fifth Champions League game that Turpin will officiate this season. The French referee notably oversaw the Skyblues’ league phase 2-0 defeat against Juventus last December. Jérôme Brisard and Willy Delajod will act as VAR and assistant VAR on Tuesday.
Tuesday’s all-Ligue 1 Champions League playoff round between Brest and PSG has been handed to Bosnian referee Irfan Peljto.
