WATCH: Lindsay Davenport remembers historic 2004 Cincinnati Open title
After contemplating retirement earlier that summer, Lindsay Davenport won the Cincinnati Open upon the WTA’s return to Mason in 2004.
MASON, Ohio − The Cincinnati Open, formerly called the Western & Southern Open, heads into the Round of 16 on Friday with some of the top-ranked ATP and WTA players set to take the court.
Friday’s revised order of play is finalized as play resumed at the Lindner Family Tennis Center at 12:30 p.m.
Some of the top-ranked players in the world will be in action Friday, including No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz, who will resume his match with France’s Gael Monfils in the second set. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner will play Australian Jordan Thompson for a spot in the quarterfinals and former Cincinnati Open champion Alexander Zverev will face the resurgent Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain during the day session.
After several of the seeded WTA players bowed out of the tournament in the Round of 32, two of them will face off for a spot in the quarterfinals when No. 1 Iga Swiatek faces No. 15 Marta Kostyuk. World No. 6 Jessica Pegula, coming off a second-straight National Bank Title, will play her first match in the Round of 32 against Karolina Muchova.
Friday’s WTA/ATP tennis results from the Cincinnati Open:
World No. 46 Gael Monfils secured his biggest victory of the year when the 37-year-old returned Friday and upset World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
World No. 28 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova defeated wild card Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals.
In her first match since winning a gold medal in Paris, World No. 7 Qinwen Zheng advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over qualifier Magdalena Frech.
Alexander Zverev, the 2021 Cincinnati Open champion and World No. 4, became the 10th player in ATP history to reach 30 Masters 1000 quarterfinals after Friday’s 7-5, 7-6 (6) victory over Pablo Carreno Busta.
After dropping the first set, World No. 17 Liudmila Samsonova rallied for a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory over Lucky Loser Elina Avanesyan. Samsonova has now reached the quarterfinals in back-to-back WTA 1000s.
Fans hoping to see both World No. 1s in action on Center Court Friday won’t get their wish. ATP No. 1 Jannik Sinner automatically advanced to the Cincinnati Open quarterfinals Saturday after his opponent, Australia’s Jordan Thompson, withdrew with a rib injury.
World No. 6 Andrey Rublev is rising to the occasion this season. The 26-year-old is the first member on tour to play in multiple ATP Masters 1000 finals this season (Madrid, Montreal). He’s now into the Cincinnati Open quarterfinals after a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win over American wild card Brandon Nakashima Friday.
In the four sets she’s won this week in Mason, Iga Swiatek has given up just six total games. The World No. 1 opened play Friday on Center Court with a dominating 6-2, 6-2 victory over No. 15 seed Marta Kostyuk.
