The Lakers made a very intriguing signing late this offseason. While it wasn’t a high-profile target or even a possible x-factor role player, it was a low-risk, high-reward signing of Christian Koloko.
The big man is only a couple of years removed from being an early second-round draft pick. After a blood clot ruled him out for the entirety of last season, he looks primed to return to the court.
However, while his doctors have cleared him to return to the court, the NBA has not officially cleared him.
In an interview with TMZ, Koloko spoke about the process of getting back on the court. He revealed that the Lakers did their own medical evaluation before signing him, but the NBA has yet to follow suit.
“Right now, I’m just waiting for the NBA to give me the green light, basically. Like you said, the Lakers did their job. My doctors gave me the green light. Now we’re just waiting on the NBA. So, we’re pretty optimistic everything goes well.”
For now, considering both Koloko’s doctors and the Lakers were confident in him returning to the court, it feels like only a matter of time before the NBA follows suit. It can be viewed as a formality with the league needing to make sure they are clear of any sort of lawsuits and issues themselves.
With training camp beginning the first week of October, a decision would, conceivably, come soon. There’s no reason for the NBA to drag this out, and especially so if, again, others have cleared him as well.
Having him ready and available at the start of training camp would be in the Lakers’ best interest. While it’s unlikely Koloko has a big role with the team this season, starting him behind the eight ball would be even more detrimental to a player who just missed an entire season.
Hopefully, a resolution on the matter comes soon and Koloko will be ready to try to make an impact at the start of the preseason.
