A schedule will be coming to the 2025 Texas football schedule, UT athletic director Chris Del Conte announced on Tuesday. A nonconference matchup against Sam Houston State has been moved up a week, now set to be played on Sept. 20.
Previously slated for Sept. 27, that Saturday will now serve as a bye for Texas. One week later will be the SEC opener against Florida, the beginning of a stretch of five conference games — four of which will be away from home.
“Our home football game with Sam Houston this fall is moving up a week to September 20,” Del Conte said via On3’s Inside Texas. “It was originally scheduled for September 27 but will now be played a week earlier closing out our non-conference schedule that includes a road game at Ohio State (Aug. 30), and home games with San Jose State (Sep. 6), UTEP (Sep. 13) and Sam Houston (Sep. 20). We’ll have a bye-week Sep. 27 then open SEC play at Florida (Oct. 4).”
Sept. 27 is the first of two bye weeks Texas will have during the season. Nov. 8 will be the second, coming after hosting Vanderbilt and before a massive showdown against Georgia in Athens. After facing UGA, two rivalry home games against Arkansas and Texas A&M will close out the year.
Texas is fresh off a successful first season in the SEC, making the conference championship game in Atlanta. A spot in the College Football Playoff was earned too, advancing to the semifinal round at the Cotton Bowl before losing to Ohio State.
All eyes will be on the Aug. 30 opener against the Buckeyes, who wound up winning the national championship.
Texas just endured its longest season in program history, playing in 16 games. An SEC Championship appearance and three College Football Playoff games meant the Longhorns played a ton of football. Now, Steve Sarkisian is having to think of creative ways to keep his team fresh moving forward.
Reportedly, the process may begin in the coming months. According to Chip Brown of Horns247, Sarkisian is considering eliminating the Texas spring game as a part of a revamped spring schedule in Austin.
“[Texas Longhorns] coach Steve Sarkisian, concerned about player wear-and-tear after a 16-game season in 2024, is considering a revamped spring football schedule that could include no spring game, sources tell @Horns247,” Brown said via X.
