Every Saturday, the league office dishes out fines to players who were involved in incidents and transgressions the week prior. This week, a Chiefs player received one from the NFL.
Chiefs safety Bryan Cook was involved in a fight with the 49ers star Trent Williams in Week 7. Late in the fourth quarter, Cook took a cheap shot at Williams and the veteran left tackle retaliated with a punch, leading to his ejection. On Saturday, Williams received a $11,817.00 fine while Cook got a bill for $8,442.64.
Considering that Cook’s punch started the interaction, it is safe to say that the 25-year-old defender got off easy with a minor fine.
The oddly specific amount Cook received as a fine is certainly confusing. Williams received a fine somewhat consistent with NFL precedent for striking. Why the Chiefs starter received less than that is difficult to understand.
This incident and light punishment could potentially set a dangerous precedent. It could allow players to take cheap shots after the game gets out of hand. Doing so results in a 15-yard penalty during the game, but that doesn’t really matter in the garbage time anyway.
Football is a contact sport and things are bound to get physical on the field. Yet, when punches to the head start getting thrown, the league has to take stricter measures. A suspension or much larger fines would have been more appropriate for both Williams and Cook.
Williams and Cook weren’t the only players involved in an altercation in Week 7. 49ers cornerback Deommodore Lenoir was also fined $11,817 for unnecessary roughness and Chiefs wide receiver Skyy Moore was fined $9,356.83 for his actions on that same play.
