PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (EMUEagles.com) – Tim Chan carded a school-record 63 on his way to finishing third overall as the Eastern Michigan University men’s golf team capped its fall slate at the 2024 White Sands Bahamas Men’s NCAA Invitational, Oct. 25-27. As a team, the Eagles played the par-72, 7,159-yard Ocean Club Course at 8-under par (856) to record the 11th-lowest team score in program history.
The Eagles opened the 12-team tournament, Oct. 25, in a tie for ninth place with a four-over 292. The next day, however, was much different as
Chan (Hong Kong, China/Loretto School/New Mexico JC/VCU) posted a nine-under 63 on the strength of 10 birdies and one bogey to lead the team to seventh place following its 11-under 277. On the final day, the team shot 287 (1-under) to finish seventh at 8-under with its lowest tournament score of the year, surpassing the 857 tallied at the season-opening Southern Dunes Invitational (Sept. 9-10).
Chan carded a 14-under 202 (69-63-70) to finish third overall and match his best finish as a collegiate competitor. His second-round 63 gave him the school record by one stroke after five different players had shot 64 in program history with the last coming Feb. 26, 2018, by Tyler Lewis at the Loyola Intercollegiate. Overall, Chan’s 202 is a season-best by nine strokes (211, Southern Dunes) and ranks as the second-lowest score in program history behind only the 200 shot by Lewis in 2018.
Two other Eagles finished at or below par in the tournament, including freshman
James Baxter (London, England/Highlands School & Sixth Form), who tied for 20th at four-under. Baxter shot 212 (71-68-73) on the weekend with his second-round 68 tying his season low. Overall, his 212 is his best collegiate score, surpassing the 213 he shot at the Southern Dunes.
Rory McDonald-O’Brien (Shrewsbury, England/Shrewsbury School/South Carolina Aiken) finished at even-par, 216 (75-70-71) as he recorded his first two rounds of par or better this year. His finish also marked the fourth tournament in his career in which he shot even-par or better.
The final three Eagles to compete in the tournament included
Bavake Sihota (Caledon, Ontario/Independent Learning Center/Michigan), who placed tied for 63rd at 12-over, 228 (77-77-74) and
Daniel Robles Delval (Albacete, Spain/Escuela Nacional Blume/Rogers State), who finished tied for 66th at 13-over, 229 (80-76-73).
Lucas Hughes (Bend, Ore./Central Christian/Grand Canyon), who competed as an individual in the event, tied for 66th as well at 229 (77-75-77).
