PELLA— Central women’s golf team opened their season at the Kohawk Classic, where a pair of Dutch seniors are in the top six after the first round.
Competing at the par 72 Pheasant Ridge Golf Course, Parker Stout (senior, Lowden, North Cedar), leads the way with a 73 and is in a tie for fourth. Lydia Grond (senior, Hull, Boyden-Hull), also finds herself in the top ten after shooting a 74 and in sixth place.
“Having our seniors lead the way it helps a lot,” said coach Tabitha Schumacher. “They played smart and capitalized on the perfect conditions.”
As a team the Dutch are in a tie for second with Mount Mercy University after shooting a 305 and are 12 shots behind Grinnell College.
Along with the seniors the team had a pair of freshmen perform well in their first collegiate round. Allie Pfantz (freshman, State Center, West Marshall) and Amber Timmer
(freshman, San Diego, Calif., Mount Carmel) both shot a 79.
“Having two freshmen contribute in the top five was impressive,” Shumacher said. “We are a young team, and we battled some nerves early in the round. We are excited to go back out tomorrow and learn from our round today.”
The final golfer in the top five was Jaden Smith (junior, Marengo, Iowa Valley), who shot an 83.
Along with the top five scorers the Dutch brought a second squad who shot a 440 and are in a tie for 12th.
The team returns to the course tomorrow at 10 a.m. to finish the tournament.
