The NBA announced Friday that Boston Celtics star wing Jaylen Brown was fined $25,000 for his actions during Wednesday’s game.

During the first quarter of the Celtics’ 130-120 home win over the Detroit Pistons, Brown made a throat-slashing gesture to celebrate an emphatic dunk.

Brown told reporters after the game that he expected to hear from the NBA with regard to the celebration, adding: “Just caught up in the moment, I guess. Big play. I think that the NBA and the NBPA [Players Association] are sensitive about the gestures and things like that, so you’ve got to be mindful of that.”

Per Spotrac, the $25,000 fine marked the first time in his career that Brown has been fined for something other than a technical foul or an ejection.

The 28-year-old Brown is off to another strong start this season, averaging 25.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 2.6 three-pointers made and 1.2 steals per game over 17 contests.

Brown, a three-time All-Star, played a pivotal role in the Celtics winning the NBA championship last season, which marked their first title since 2008.

He averaged 23.9 points 5.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 19 playoff games and was named both Eastern Conference Finals MVP and NBA Finals MVP.

Given the Celtics’ dominance last season, they entered the 2024-25 campaign as the odds-on favorites to repeat as champions, and they haven’t disappointed.

At 18-4, the Celtics have the second-best record in the NBA, and they are just 1.5 games behind the Cleveland Cavaliers for the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.

The win over Detroit marked Boston’s ninth victory in the past 10 games, making the Celtics one of the league’s hottest teams.

Boston will look to continue its winning ways Friday when it hosts a Milwaukee Bucks team that has won seven of its past eight outings.
