CARTHAGE, New York (WWNY) – Carthage Central has put up a plaque honoring a former football player who would have been a senior this school year, a tribute to a young person who was lost way too early.
Tyler Christman passed away on September 21, 2021, after sustaining a head injury during a junior varsity football game at West Genesee early in that season.
When Carthage took the field Friday night against Indian River, the Comets touched the plaque as they ran onto the field.
The plaque was officially dedicated Monday afternoon alongside one that honors the late Terry Coffman. Former teammates, friends, and family, including Tyler’s parents, were on hand for the event.
“We’re grateful that the school and the coaches and the team did this, Stacy Dorchester, Coach Coffman,” Jason Christman said. “It’s pretty special to have this here for Tyler to remember him. He loved sports, lacrosse, football, Peewee wrestling. From the time he could walk, he was involved in any kind of sport you could imagine. Racing and motorsports.”
“It’s overdue for sure,” head coach Jason Coffman said, but seeing he would have been a senior with this group of seniors, it was perfect timing. To have the game that we did last week, it shows we got people up there looking out for us.”
Tyler Christman’s memory will forever live on in the form of a special plaque next to the Carthage football field.
