Caroline Wozniacki called Serena Williams out during her on-court interview at the US Open after the 23-time Grand Slam champion returned to Flushing Meadows.
Former world No. 1 Wozniacki is through to the second week, beating Jessika Ponchet 6-3 6-2. But she was “pretty mad” after seeing her good friend Williams snubbed her match to watch Tommy Paul.
It’s been just over a year since Wozniacki left retirement to return to professional tennis. A few weeks into her comeback, she reached the last 16 at the 2023 US Open. And the Dane has now matched that run, getting through to week two again.
The 2018 Australian Open champion has dropped just 12 games in her first three matches and put on another dominant display against French qualifier Ponchet over on the Grandstand court on Saturday.
Wozniacki was delighted with the crowd support, telling the fans that it felt like a “big party”. But there was one person who was noticeably absent from the stands. Williams is back at the US Open as a spectator this weekend but she didn’t come to Grandstand to watch her close friend in action.
She was seen on Arthur Ashe Stadium, where Jessica Pegula and Jannik Sinner won in the day session, while Wozniacki heard she was in the stands for Paul’s match. The 34-year-old was informed that Williams was at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Centre. Asked whether they’d catch up, Wozniacki replied: “I hope so.”
And she took the opportunity to call the American out for missing her match. “I’m going to text her. I’m pretty mad at her for not showing up at my match. I saw she was watching Tommy. You know, but I think we have to talk about that a little later,” Wozniacki joked.
The former world No. 1 reached two US Open finals earlier in her career but failed to get her hands on the trophy. And she’d relish the opportunity to finish what she started before entering retirement back in 2020.
