Carlos Alcaraz winning Wimbledon could be bad news for England ahead of Spain Euro 2024 final clash

Carlos Alcaraz has won his second Wimbledon title, with the 21-year-old destroying Novak Djokovic in straight sets to secure glory.

But it could be bad news for the England football team as they prepare to lock horns with Spain in the final of Euro 2024 on Sunday night.

The last three times a Spaniard has won Wimbledon, they’ve gone on to claim major football trophies.

Back in 2008, after Rafael Nadal saw off Roger Federer, La Roja proceeded to secure European Championships glory.

They beat Germany in the final courtesy of a goal from Fernando Torres, who would have spells in England with Liverpool and Chelsea during his playing days.

Two years later, Nadal won his second Wimbledon crown.

And Spain got the job done in the football, beating the Netherlands 1-0 in the final of the World Cup courtesy of a dramatic late goal from Andres Iniesta.

Alcaraz won his first Wimbledon title last year when he got the better of Djokovic after a five-set thriller.

And Spain then beat England in the final of the Women’s World Cup, shattering the hearts of a nation in the process.

Alcaraz was asked about the Euro 2024 clash in the aftermath of his win.

There were a few boos for the youngster, who admitted he’d be watching the match with members of his entourage.

“With my team, for sure. I watch it for sure,” he said when asked about his plans.

“I’ve already done my job … now let’s see the football.

“It’s going to be a really difficult match.”

Alcaraz was delighted after winning Wimbledon, with the 21-year-old admitting it was a dream come true.

“Honestly it’s a dream for me winning this trophy,” he said in an on-court interview with Annabel Croft.

“It’s a great feeling to play on this beautiful court and trophy. It’s the most beautiful tournament.”

On when he had his serve broken as he served for the match, he added: “It was 40-0.

“Djokovic is an unbelievable fighter, I tried to win with my serve, but I couldn’t.

“I tried to stay calm and positive going into the tie-break and play my best tennis. That’s all I was thinking about.

“I’m glad at the end I could find the solutions.”

As for Djokovic, the Serb was out of sorts throughout the showdown.

But he said he was proud to have made the final of Wimbledon, despite undergoing knee surgery just 37 days before the competition started.

“I have to be very proud,” he said.

“Obviously there’s disappointment right now but when I reflect on the last four to five weeks, what I’ve been through [with the knee surgery], I’m very satisfied.

“I try to remind myself sometimes of how surreal it is being here; being really blessed to fight for the trophy.

“Every time I step on the court it feels like the first time. I’m a child living a childhood dream.”
