Carlos Alcaraz made an impressive debut at the Qatar Open after beating fellow Grand Slam champion Marin Cilic in straight sets.
Alcaraz has made changes to his game for the 2025 season, with these adaptations starting to come to fruition after he won his first indoor hard court title at the Rotterdam Open.
In previous years the Spaniard has played in South America, but this year he has made a switch to his schedule and instead Alcaraz reacted to Joao Fonseca’s victory in Buenos Aires.
Many people including Andy Murray want to see Alcaraz play Fonseca, with the pair having similar starts to their time on the ATP Tour.
While Alcaraz is still only 21-years-old, he has been on tour for multiple years now and is starting to be asked about what he wants his future legacy to look like.
One of the biggest announcements ahead of the 2025 season was that Murray would be coaching Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open.
While it is not currently clear what is next for the former rivals, it is being reported that Djokovic and Murray will reunite at Indian Wells.
With this surprise partnership set to continue in the coming months, Alcaraz was asked about whether he would consider being a coach and who from the current ATP players he would choose to mentor him.
Alcaraz did not appear too confident in his own coaching abilities, but suggested that world number 23 Felix Auger-Aliassime would be a good coach for the future.
“I don’t know if I could be a good coach, but as an active player I would probably choose Felix,” Alcaraz told an interviewer in Doha. “He’s a very serious guy, a guy with clear goals, a good player too, so I would choose him.”
This question has been brought to other players on tour, with Stefanos Tsitsipas actually picking Alcaraz as the player he would choose to coach him.
Alcaraz has not been accompanied by main coach Juan Carlos Ferrero at any tournaments since the Australian Open.
However, Ferrero did react to Alcaraz’s Rotterdam win in a social media post congratulating the world number three.
Alcaraz is without Ferrero once again in Doha, and is being mentored by secondary coach Samuel Lopez.
Ferrero is set to rejoin his player for the sunshine double of Indian Wells, where Alcaraz is a two-time defending champion, and the Miami Open.
Before then, Alcaraz will continue his bid for an 18th career title when he plays either Zhizhen Zhang or Luca Nardi in the second round of the Qatar Open.
