This virtual workshop provides specific advice and strategies for job candidates to consider when applying for a faculty position at a community college. Panelists include community college faculty from California, Minnesota, and Texas. Topics will include: resume/CV best practices, reading the job description, interview preparation, regional job market considerations, perspectives from the search committee side, and pivoting from an R1 job hunt. Meet the Panelists:
Steven Cauchon holds a Ph.D.in Political Science from UC Riverside and is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Imperial Valley College. Dr. Cauchon specializes in International Relations and Political Theory, with a focus on environmental justice and transnational social movements. His research examines the inequities associated with the international movement of waste and the different processes by which transnational environmental non-governmental organizations (TENGOs) support frontline communities pursuing justice.
Paul Gottemoller is a tenured Professor of Political Science at Del Mar College, where he currently serves as Assistant Chair in the Department of Social Sciences. He has contributed to many college-wide projects, including rewriting the college’s academic dishonesty policy, and has served in faculty governance as Chair of the Del Mar Faculty Council. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Southern Illinois University, an M.A. and a B.A. in Political Studies from the University of Illinois Springfield, and an A.A. in Political Science from Richland Community College.
Mark L. Johnson is a tenured Instructor in Political Science, History, and Geography at Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Moorhead, MN. In addition to teaching most of the Political Science, World Geography, and American History courses for the College, he’s also served as Interim Dean, Chair of the College Curriculum Committee, and Co-Chair of the Minnesota State Systemwide Political Science Pathway degree committee. He tries to carve out a little time each semester for research focused on the North Dakota Legislature and State and Local elections in the Upper Midwest. He has served APSA as Chair of the TLC Program Committee (2015), and as co-Editor of the Journal of Political Science Education (2016-2022).
Helen Chang is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Eugenio María de Hostos Community College of The City University of New York (CUNY) in the Bronx, New York. She holds a B.A. in International Relations and French and an M.A in Sociology from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the CUNY Graduate Center. Her research interests include municipal election reforms, the structure of local electoral management bodies, and teaching and learning in political science. Helen has been a participant of APSA’s Teaching and Learning Symposiums: Teaching Political Science at Community Colleges in 2022 and De-Centering the U.S. in the Global Politics Classroom in 2024. As part of these symposiums, she has contributed a Community Mapping assignment and Design Your Own Comparison Indicator assignment to APSA Educate. She also served as a member of the 2024 TLC at APSA Program Committee. She is currently the co-chair of APSA Committee on the Status of Community Colleges in the Profession.
