BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) – On Wednesday, students at Biloxi High School saw firsthand what jobs are available in their chosen fields.
A gym full of hands-on experiences allowed students to explore options. Most of the exhibits display programs already offered through classes in the school, such as health science, graphic design, and welding.
“We’re able to get certified in first aid CPR, we get phlebotomy if you want to do that, we’re able to get certified in EKG and get a job right out of high school,” explained student Keona Ball.
“Eventually, we go into the software and we learn how to use it, how to design houses in the software and different floor plans,” added Maria Rissardi.
“Within this program, you also learn how to do burning, which is cutting different plates and such, and you’ll also learn how to use different tools that may come out within welding,” noted Job Gray.
Students say they are grateful for the chance to get hands-on learning in their field since it gives them an idea of what to expect.
“If you’re not sure you don’t want to be in the healthcare field, this class will get you set up and guide you in the right direction that you want to go,” said Rissardi. “If you don’t know, it’s okay. It’s high school. This class teaches you the basics you need.”
“You get to know that, ‘Hey, this is a dangerous job as it is,’ but it lets you know that whether or not you want to take that job line because if you do, you can go anywhere in the world essentially and get a job,” described Gray.
It can also be a confidence booster as long as they’re willing to put in the work.
“It prepares me for the workforce so I can know what I’m signing up for while also helping me understand responsibilities in life,” stated Jaylen Jupiter.
“Don’t be afraid to try new things,” added Ball. “It’s going to be a very new experience. Just make the most of it.”
The school says this career expo was part of Career & Technical Education Month at the school.
