The Olympics are having a major impact on the Canadian Open.
And not in a good way.
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek became the latest tennis star to withdraw from next week’s Canadian Open following her bronze-medal finish at the Paris Olympics. Six of the top 10 women in the world are now out of the Canadian event.
“I’m sorry to announce that due to overall fatigue caused by the last couple of weeks on the court I need to withdraw from the tournament in Toronto,” Swiatek said in a news release by Tennis Canada.
“Due to an intense tennis schedule with the Olympics taking place this year and changing surfaces, I need more time to rest and recover in order to be ready to play the US swing in good health and at my best possible level.”
The Canadian Open is traditionally the second-biggest warmup for the U.S. Open behind only the Cincinnati Open. The women’s event this year is in Toronto, and the men’s is in Montreal. Both run Aug. 6-12.
Barbora Krejckikova, the world No. 10 and an Olympic quarterfinalist, also withdrew from the Canadian event.
On the men’s side, No. 2 Novak Djokovic, No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz, No. 6 Alex de Minaur and No. 16 Lorenzo Musetti all pulled out of Canada.
Djokovic and Alcaraz will battle for the Olympic gold medal on Sunday (10:30 ET, Peacock) in a rematch of the Wimbledon final won in straight sets last month by Alcaraz.
Musetti, who lost to Djokovic in the Olympic semifinals, faced Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the bronze-medal match on Saturday.
