BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell opens its 2024-25 men’s golf campaign Sunday at the Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate, hosted by Coastal Carolina at Grande Dunes Resort Club.
 
Head coach John Crooks and associate head coach Matt Moot will start a lineup that includes sophomores Erick Johansson and Joachim Larsen Tegner, seniors Henric Bjelke and Douglas Nordlof, and freshman Benjamin Killingstad.
 
The 15-team field includes Big Ten member Maryland, plus host Coastal Carolina, as well as Campbell’s CAA rival Elon and regional rival East Carolina.  The Camels will be paired with Elon and Florida Atlantic for Sunday’s opening round and start from the 10th tee at 9:40 a.m.

The Course: Grande Dunes Resort Club (Par 72, 7578 Yards)
Grande Dunes has been ranked among “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses” by Golf Digest and the Roger Rulewich design is one of Myrtle Beach’s most sought-after tee times. Sweeping fairways, large greens and, of course, those stunning Intracoastal Waterway views have come to define the popular layout.  On a course full of breathtaking views, the par 3 14th stands out. Playing from an elevated tee box to a green that resides along the Intracoastal Waterway, No. 14 is on the shortlist of the best par 3s in all of South Carolina golf.  Holes 8, 9, 10 and 15 also bring the waterway into play.
 
The Coach: Now in his 35th year in charge of the Campbell men’s golf program and 34th as head coach of the CU women, John Crooks has been named league coach of the year 23 times in his tenure.  His teams have combined to earn 36 NCAA post-season trips, including 15 in a row team and individual invitations.  His teams have won 160 tournaments and with 99 career tournament titles, Crooks trails only Dan Brooks of Duke (143) on the all-time coaching victories list among Division I women’s coaches.  He has guided his teams to 27 league titles, including 19 on the women’s side and eight in men’s competition.
 
The Lineup:
 
Sophomore Erik Johansson (Hollviken, Sweden) was named CAA rookie of the year and a first-team all-conference selection in 2024.  He posted a team-leading 72.26 stroke average, which stands 19th all-time among Campbell single-season leaders and 2nd among CU freshman class records.  Johansson earned an individual berth in the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional.  He finished among the top 20 individuals seven times, including his first collegiate victory at the Seahawk Intercollegiate (71-71-66—208), plus a T10 showing at the CAA Championship (68-72-74—214).  Johansson played par, or better, golf in 18 of 35 rounds – T8th all-time by a CU player and fired a collegiate career-low 66 twice.
 
Sophomore Joachim Larsen Tegner (Lier, Norway) compiled the fifth-best stroke average by a Campbell freshman (73.0) in the program’s NCAA Division I history during the 2023-24 campaign.  He played in 11 events and posted 15 rounds of par, or better, golf with four rounds in the 60s.  Named CAA golfer of the week Feb. 7 after a T4 finish in the Battle at Briar’s Creek (67-75—142), where he shot his collegiate low round, Larsen Tegner also recorded top 10 finishes at the Georgetown Intercollegiate (72-70-77—219, T10) and CAA Championship (70-73-69—212, 8th).
 
Freshman Benjamin Killingstad (Blommenholm, Norway) will make his collegiate debut at Grande Dunes.  He posted eight top-10 finishes, including 4 victories, in his first 18 WAGR events.  Killingstad won the 2024 Norwegian Junior National Championship (71-72-67-70).
 
Senior Henric Bjelke (Oslo, Norway) owns the 22nd-lowest career stroke average (74.44) in CU men’s golf history and has competed in three conference championship tournaments.  A 2024 Cobalt Golf GCAA All-America, Bjelke compiled a 73.7 scoring average and played par, or better, golf in 10 rounds, including six of his last seven rounds of the season.  He posted a career-best T5 finish at the 2024 Cutter Creek Intercollegiate (71-70-70—211).  The 2022 Big South Conference freshman of the year, Bjelke finished among the top 20 in each of his last four events last spring, including an 18th-place effort at the CAA Championship.
 
Senior Douglas Nordlof (Saltsjobaden, Sweden) owns a 75.6 scoring average over 16 tournaments in a Camel uniform.  Since joining the Campbell lineup as a transfer in 2022-23, he has competed in the Big South (2023) and CAA (2024) Championship.  Nordlof has posted two top-20 showings for Campbell, including a T16 at the 2023 Stitch Intercollegiate.
