PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Arizona State star running back Cam Skattebo is being sued by a former teammate over a golf cart accident that happened nearly two years ago.
In a newly amended civil lawsuit, former ASU offensive lineman walk-on Mattheos Katergaris and his attorney, Neil Udulutch, named Skattebo as a defendant as well as the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR), which oversees the state’s public universities.
The lawsuit stems from an incident that reportedly happened on July 31, 2023, at ASU’s football practice fields in Tempe. The suit alleges that after football practice, Katergaris and another student-athlete were in the rear-facing backseat of a university-owned golf cart being driven by an ASU employee.
The golf cart is typically used to take athletes to and from the practice field.
During the trip, the lawsuit alleges that “Skattebo jumped on the back of the golf cart, which was already at maximum load,” and that he “jumped up and down” on the rear seat of the cart. This reportedly caused the rear bench to collapse, and Katergaris fell out of the cart.
According to the lawsuit, Katergaris had serious injuries “which resulted in months of medical care.”
The documents further state that the Arizona State football team was instructed about the proper use of golf carts the day before the accident. The team had reportedly been told the weight limit on the back seat of the cart was 600 pounds, and there shouldn’t be more than two people on the last row.
A portion of the complaint, which was amended in February, states that Skattebo’s actions were the “actual and proximate cause of the Plaintiff’s [Katergaris] injuries and damages.” However, the original complaint filed last May blamed the driver for allowing three passengers on the rear bench, which caused “structural failure of the vehicle.”
Katergaris is suing ABOR and Skattebo for negligence and is seeking over $300,000 in compensation for “past and future medical expenses.”
A previous motion filed by Katergaris’ legal team stated that they made efforts to serve Skattebo with the legal paperwork, but were unable to locate him at his last known addresses in Tempe and his hometown of Rio Linda, California. Skattebo has not issued a statement regarding the lawsuit, however he did participate in the NFL Combine over the weekend in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Katergaris played football at Desert Mountain High School before walking on at ASU in 2022.
Skattebo transferred to ASU from Sacramento State in 2023. He had his breakout season with the Sun Devils in 2024, recording over 1,700 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns.
