Bears Secure Third Straight Top-4 Finish To Start Season
STOCKTON – Four California men’s golfers shot under par in the final round of the Pacific Invitational on Wednesday to power the Golden Bears to a third-place finish at Stockton Country Club.
The Bears collectively carded an 8-under-par 276 in the third round and finished the three-day, 54-hole tournament at 21-under (281-274-276—831). They entered the day in third place and were unable to make up ground on champion San Diego (-32), which shot 11-under-par 273 on Tuesday to leap past host Pacific (-28) for a four-stroke victory. The Tigers’ Travis Robbie (-13) was individual medalist.
Kuangyu (Tony) Chen notched his first top-10 individual finish of the season, a tie for eighth, with a 2-under-par 69 on Wednesday, keyed by a pair of eagles on holes 2 and 16. Chen, a redshirt senior, ended the tournament at 7-under-par 206 to lead all Bears.
Following Chen on the leaderboard was Wenliang Xie (-5), Daniel Heo (-4) and Ziqin (Eric) Zhou (-3), who tied for 14th, 16th and 22nd, respectively. Xie paced the team in the final round, carding a 4-under 67 that included an eagle on hole 14 and birdies on 2, 10 and 18.
Cal – ranked No. 45 in Scoreboard/Clippd’s first national rankings of the season, released Wednesday – has finished inside the top four of all three tournaments played this fall.
