MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – While some people buy their gifts at big box stores for Valentine’s Day, local businesses are encouraging you to think about them.
Lutey’s Flower Shop Owner Sarah Ruuska says the Third Street store starts ordering flowers for Valentine’s Day as early as December. On Friday, Lutey’s will have six times the normal number of people working in the shop.
“It’s a wild day. We go from having three or so employees on a regular day-to-day business to about 18 for Valentine’s Day,” Ruuska said.
She says roses are the most popular Valentine’s Day option, though people order a wide range of bouquets and arrangements to celebrate the holiday.
“It’s a lot of mixed, different ideas but we do go through a lot of roses,” Ruuska said.
Over at Doncker’s in downtown Marquette, the candy kitchen is hard at work to stock the shelves. That includes the classic chocolate-covered strawberries.
Doncker’s Executive Candy Maker Shane Baker says shopping locally makes a big difference in the community.
“This something I can say ‘hey, I created that,’ and they’re all unique,” Baker said. “We try to keep everything consistent and looking the same, but you can see it’s a handmade item. Our love, as we’ll say for the day is in that item.”
Baker says local, hand-made gifts don’t compare to the other options.
“You’re not going to find the quality of ingredients that we use here at Doncker’s that you’re going to find in the products at the big box store,” Baker said.
Baker says even if you’re shopping last minute…
“Just make sure you get in here and get a treaty for your sweetie,” Baker said.
Valentine’s Day is just three days away.
