The rivalry between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf took an unintentional turn during Tuesday’s Showdown on TNT when Bryson DeChambeau’s wayward tee shot on the second hole inadvertently struck a patron — and that patron happened to be Scottie Scheffler’s father. That report came via the telecast from on-course reporter Bubba Watson.
The made-for-TV match at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas is pitting Scheffler and Rory McIlroy against LIV Golf’s DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka.
Of course, DeChambeau already stirred the pot during a Monday range session. All four players were mic’d up and when McIlroy made a comment, DeChambeau responded with a zinger.
“I’d like to go up against Bryson to try to get him back for what he did to me at the U.S. Open,” McIlroy said.
DeChambeau’s response: “To be fair, you kind of did it to yourself.”
Scheffler’s father, Scott, appeared to be unfazed by the incident.
Shadow Creek held the very first Match between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
As first reported by Golfweek’s Eamon Lynch, The Showdown was created by Bryan Zuriff’s BZ Entertainment and EverWonder Studio. Zuriff was previously involved in The Match, a series of TV matches that launched in 2018 and featured McIlroy, DeChambeau and Koepka. EverWonder Studio was founded last year by former Sports Illustrated executive Ian Orefice and backed by Jeff Zucker’s RedBird IMI.
