Throughout the first few weeks of its 2024 season, a pattern has emerged for Brush boys golf. After two tricky tournaments at RainDance National and Southridge Golf Course, the Beetdiggers have placed fifth at four of their next five tournaments.
Consistency on the course is what every golfer strives for.
On Thursday last week, the Diggers traveled up to the Estes Park Golf Course for that school’s Cope Invitational for the Mile High League, and once again took home fifth as a team out of the 15 squads in attendance. They totaled 263 strokes, 44 behind first-place Resurrection Christian.
Junior Keeton Jilek led the initiative with a 13-over-par 84, which placed him squarely at 13th in the field of 84 golfers. Junior Ben Mettlen didn’t lag too far behind on the scorecard, but his 89 tied him for 24th alongside Horizon’s Matthew Kresnik.
Sophomore Logan Snyder, who carded a 90, engaged in a five-way tie for 26th, before junior Dray Bauer took it home with 96 strokes and a spot at 43rd. Sophomore Chase Pollart contributed his own score of 98 (46th) as freshman Silas Purvis threw his own hat in the ring with a 107 (63rd). Freshman Carson Stone capped off Brush’s effort by carding a 114 (76th).
The Diggers hit the links at Sky Ranch Golf Club for the Sterling Tiger Invitational on Monday, and will head next to the Akron Rams Varsity Invite at Washington County Golf Club on Friday.
A short stint in a slump didn’t stop Brush softball from rising again.
The Diggers regained their footing following a four-game skid when they faced off with Rocky Ford during a weekend tournament. After six, hard-fought innings, they beat out the Meloneers with a 9-8 final.
That victory gave way to another close call, this time in a 13-11 showing against Sterling, before they slammed Nebraska team Bayard with a 14-2 clinic. Brush head to Platte Valley next on Tuesday.
