The Cleveland Browns have holes everywhere you look. But for each hole, there is a solid player that if a decent guy was paired with, the position could be productive.
The NFL free agency period doesn’t begin until March 10, which is considered the legal tampering date which lasts for three days. The 2025 league year and official free agency signing period begin at 4:00 p.m. (Eastern) on March 12.
The Browns could find ways to have sufficient room under the salary cap to go after several prime free agents this off-season. But who? What positions? At what cost?
GM Andrew Berry is an excellent student of the financial portion of his position. His free agent signings over the years since he was given the keys to the franchise have been up and down. For every Jack Conklin, there is a Juan Thornhill.
With a collection of 14 losses for 2024, is this the time to begin a complete rebuild? Or just a re-load? Whatever the case, the free agents that Berry signs this year have got to be spot-on in order to become key contributors.
Here are several for Berry to consider.
Age: 26
Draft: 2021 – Round 1, pick #24 (Steelers)
NFL starts: 68
College accolades: First Team All-SEC, Second Team All-SEC, Two Time National Champion, Doak Walker Award winner, Unanimous All-American
Pro accolades: NFL All-Rookie Team, Pro Bowl
2024 cap hit: $4.15 million
40 time: 4.45
The Steelers will go into this off-season without a quarterback and without a featured running back. They could use the franchise tag on Harris, but there are other players who will most likely be more important.
Last May Pittsburgh declined the fifth-year option on Harris making him available in free agency. As far as injuries, he has had his share of bumps and bruises such as ankle and elbow sprains, but has never missed a game in his four years with the Steelers.
As far as production, Harris has crossed the 1,000-yard barrier all four years in Pittsburgh gaining 4,312 yards on 1,097 carries with 28 touchdowns, 208 first-down conversions, and a 3.9 yards per carry average. He is also a very good blocker and receiver gaining 1,149 yards on 180 receptions with six scores, 60 first down conversions, and a 6.4 yards per catch average.
Harris has always been a back that has achieved high numbers for yards after contact (YAC). His rankings: 2024 – #11: 541 yards; 2023 – #3: 535; 2022 – #10: 459; 2021 (rookie) – #3: 675.
It is not certain if Nick Chubb will return in 2025. One thing for certain, he was not the same back before his latest knee injury.
If the Browns are going to get back to being a run-dominant team, they will need a workhorse for a running back. Harris is just that guy. He is a big guy who will punish tacklers, and he works through pain and minor issues. He has ridiculous consistency as a football player.
Harris will have plenty of suitors in free agency. However, the running back group in this year’s NFL draft is very deep in all rounds which should help Berry’s effort to bring him to Cleveland.
Age: 30
Draft: 2016 – Round 1, pick #6 (Ravens)
NFL starts: 104
College accolades: Consensus All-American, Polynesian Football Player of the Year
Pro accolades: First Team All-Pro, Pro Bowl
2024 cap hit: $17.05 million
40 time: 5.18
This would be an absolute home run for the Browns’ offense. RT Jack Conklin signed an extension through 2026 but is always hurt. Dawand Jones has filled in at both tackle spots but can’t stay healthy either. When this happens, it is a revolving door of guys who get plugged in to play offensive tackle.
At times, both tackle positions have been manned by backups or journeymen.
A hard-hitting run game needs offensive tackles who are exceptional run blockers. That describes Stanley. His Pro Football Focus grades in 2024 were 75.2 in run blocking and 79.8 for pass protection. Get this: he only allowed two sacks all year. He played 1,089 snaps so he is durable and a proven blocker. He would anchor the LT position and allow the Browns to have Jones as a swing tackle.
Stanley has outstanding foot quickness with long arms. Plays with quick hands and a well-timed punch. Specializes in quicksets getting his hands into the pass rusher first helping him to control the flow of the snap. Strong athlete and flexible.
Age: 24
Draft: 2021 – Round 2, pick #36 (Dolphins)
NFL starts: 57
College accolades:
Pro accolades: NFL All-Rookie Team
2024 cap hit: $4.29 million
40 time: 4.47
Each of the last three seasons Holland has graded out as one of the five best safeties in the league. He is durable and a head hunter. The Browns will need to get rid of Juan “Jog” Thornhill and bring in a guy who will work and lay it all out on the field every game. His body of work previously more than speaks for itself.
In 2024 Holland graded out on Pro Football Focus at 86.8 in run defense and 74.4 in pass coverage. He is a missile on run plays and is able to cover taller tight ends. In four seasons with Miami, he has five picks, 301 total tackles, 10 QB hits, nine tackles for loss, 25 batted passes, five forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries.
Holland is a versatile safety with good size, above-average instincts, and impressive ball skills. Strong tackler who is more than willing to come up and lay the wood. He has proper eye balance between quarterback and route traffic from zone and is able to separate from perimeter blocks. Aggressive strikes as a downhill tackler.
The Browns have had good luck with Grant Delpit at safety and have some young bucks that will eventually grow into a starter’s job such as D’Anthony Bell and Ronnie Hickman. And since Rodney McLeod retired, for now, Cleveland needs a tackling demon who has exceptional coverage skills to pair with Delpit.
