Brooks Koepka gave the golf world a big surprise when he visited the SoFi Center to watch the latest Tomorrow Golf League (TGL) matches this past week. Koepka was even given a tour of the virtual course and was seen chatting animatedly with his former colleagues from the Jupiter Links Golf Club and Bay Golf Club teams.
Not surprisingly, he was asked about it at the first opportunity. Days after his TGL experience, Koepka appeared on The Joe Pomp Show, hosted by journalist Joe Pompliano, where the 5-time major winner highlighted some of the interesting points of the new league.
In particular, Koepka emphasized that the TGL fits the new landscape in which people, especially young people, are adapting to products of shorter duration. This, he said, is something it has in common with LIV Golf:
“Look, it’s just golf at the end of the day and you’ve gotta make it more fun and entertaining and the attention span the younger generation has isn’t as long as everybody sitting on the couch watching golf for 5 or 6 hours. You’ve got to innovate and be creative and that’s what we [LIV Golf] are trying to do, TGL is trying to do the same thing.”
He also mentioned the fans in attendance and the top-notch technology as elements that play a key role in the success of these types of events.
“As a player you look out at the crowd and see young people and you want to be able to bring your family,” Koepka said. “I think sports are going that way, more vocal, they want a reaction out of you.”
“It [The TGL] got guys chirping,” he added. “I mean it’s fun, I want to watch it, it’s evolving, technology is evolving.”
Brooks Koepka has generally been open to alternative experiences in golf. Last December, he teamed up with Bryson DeChambeau to face off against Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy in the made-for-TV show “The Showdown,” and years ago he participated in a similar show called “The Match.”
In 2022, Koepka signed with LIV Golf, also a new kind of league in its own right. The 34-year-old is one of the leading stars on the circuit and the leading individual winner with five titles to date. In that time, he has also won a major championship (the 2023 PGA Championship) and finished runner-up at the 2023 Masters.
His professional golf career boasts 21 victories, including five major championships and four other PGA Tour events. He also has one title on the DP World Tour, four on the Challenge Tour, two on the Japan Golf Tour and the aforementioned five on LIV Golf.
