Johnny Avello gives his top horse racing picks for Day 1 of the Breeders’ Cup on DK Horse.
We all enjoy big racing days, and none could be more sizable than the two-day Breeders’ Cup Championships this weekend at Del Mar. It kicks off on Friday with two-year-old colts and fillies competing in five races with combined purses of $7 million.
All eyes will certainly be focused on The Juvenile (Race 9 on the card with post time at 4:45 p.m. PT). In most cases, the winner of this race is the early leading contender to win the following year’s Kentucky Derby. The field is filled with promising colts such as East Avenue, winner of the Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland, and Jonathan’s Way, winner of The Iroquois at Churchill Downs. Also in the field is Gaming, winner of the Del Mar Futurity and trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, as well as other top-notch two-year-old colts.
One that I am personally excited to see is Chancer McPatrick, who has won both the Hopeful and Champagne Stakes in NY. I’m going to bet him to Win/Place and use him in Exactas with the three horses mentioned above.
By the way, the Kentucky Derby Future Book pool opens this weekend and all of the horses in this race are listed.
