Breeders’ Cup First Look: 9 championships on day 2

The best of the U.S. take on international challengers on day 2 of Breeders’ Cup 2024, with Fierceness facing City of Troy and Forever Young in the $7 million Classic. The nine championship races on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Del Mar, have a total of $23 million in purses.
Pre-entries for all Breeders’ Cup races will be announced Wednesday at noon EDT, and the draw will be held the Monday before the races at 7 p.m.
Here are the possible entries as listed on the Breeders’ Cup website Thursday afternoon. One exception is Seize the Grey, whose connections opted for the Dirt Mile over the Classic.
Race 4, Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, 1 mile
Seize the Grey won at this distance in the Pat Day Mile (G2) on the Kentucky Derby undercard before stretching out for his next four starts, which included wins in the Preakness and the Pennsylvania Derby (G1) last out. After losses in the Kentucky Derby and Pegasus Domestic Product cut back to a mile and won the Dwyer (G3) and then the H. Allen Jerkens (G1) last out at 7 furlongs. Skippylongstocking, winner of three graded stakes this year and also a possible for the Classic, was second to Tapit Trice last out in the Woodward (G2). Stronghold is coming off second-place finishes in the Indiana Derby (G3) and Pennsylvania Derby.

He also has the highest Beyer Speed Figure of the year, according to Daily Racing Form, a 114 for his track-record-setting win in the Jaipur (G1) at Saratoga. Big Evs won this event last year and is 2-for-4 since, including an eighth-place finish last out in the Nunthorpe (G1). Motorious is 1-for-3 this year, but that win came at this track and distance in the Green Flash (G3) last out. Three-year-old Howard Wolowitz is coming off a win in the Franklin-Simpson (G1).
