The 2024 Breeders’ Cup World Championships kicked off with five ‘Future Stars Friday’ races. For the second year in a row, a 16/1 longshot won the BC Juvenile as fans got a look at some early contenders for next year’s Kentucky Derby. That includes Bob Bafftert trained Citizen Bull (16/1) and Gaming (6/1), who finished 1st and 2nd in the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Last year’s BC Juvenile winner Fierceness now leads a field of 14 for in the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic – the headliner race of 9 Breeders’ Cup events Saturday at gorgeous, picturesque Del Mar.

I was at the Breeders’ Cup Friday and back Saturday for the biggest races that draw the most watch and wager action for the 41st Breeders’ Cup. The Bob Baffert-trained colt Citizen Bull is sired by Into Mischief and earns a perfect Super Screener score punctuated by the dominant victory in the G1 American Pharoah in which he set a slow pace and then hit another gear resulting in an excellent BRIS Late Pace figure of 107. Moving forward going from a sprint to a route is a key screening factor and his move resulted in the best BRIS Speed Rating figure in the field. He’s the Top Board Hitter pick and offering Top Value and one to wager on as he powers through the final two furlongs for the win.
