With their combined 5-for-5 record, East Avenue and Chancer
McPatrick lead the 2-year-olds who were pre-entered this week into the Nov. 1
races at Breeders’ Cup 2024.
The two colts who have three Grade 1 triumphs between them
will race in the $2 million Juvenile championship, the feature on a Friday that
includes four other championships.
Pre-entries were taken Monday and due to be announced Wednesday for
all 14 Breeders’ Cup races. Nine other championships will be staged Saturday,
Nov. 2.
The revealing of the pre-entries begins Wednesday at noon on FanDuel TV and Breeders’ Cup website.
Race 6, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, 5 furlongs,
turf
Mick Appleby is not related to Charlie Appleby, but the
not-as-well-known trainer has Europe’s early betting favorite for the first of
the 14 championships. Bet365 in England shows Group 3 winner Big Mojo at 5-1
odds after finishing second by just a neck last month in a five-furlong, Group
2 race at Doncaster. He lost to Aesterius, who also won a Group 3 stakes Sept.
1 at ParisLongchamp. Ecoro Sieg comes from Japan with a 2-for-2 record, winning
by open lengths in a pair of six-furlong races.
Race 7, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, 1 1/16 miles
Immersive looks like a champion in waiting. The Godolphin
homebred daughter of Nyquist who is trained by Brad Cox is 3-for-3 with Grade 1
victories already in the Spinaway and Alcibiades. Scottish Lassie, by McKinzie,
was a maiden-breaking, nine-length winner Oct. 5 in the one-mile Frizette (G1).
American Bikini, an American Pharoah filly, comes from Japan with wins in
maiden and handicap races but stretches past seven furlongs for the first time.
Race 8, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, 1 mile, turf
Lake Victoria is an even-money favorite in Europe to run her
record to 5-for-5 for Coolmore and trainer Aidan O’Brien. The Frankel filly had
two Group 1 scores 13 days apart last month, finishing first by 1 1/4 lengths
in the seven-furlong Moyglare Stud at the Curragh and then by three lengths in
the six-furlong Cheveley Park at Newmarket. This will be her first time going
longer than seven furlongs.
Race 9, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, 1 1/16 miles
Godolphin homebred East Avenue has not taken a wrong step in
his two races. The Medaglia d’Oro colt trained by Brendan Walsh finished first
by eight lengths in his Ellis Park debut and then ran away by 5 1/4 lengths
going two turns in the 1 1/16-mile Breeders’ Futurity (G1) this month at
Keeneland. Chancer McPatrick comes into the race with a 3-for-3 record for
trainer Chad Brown. After breaking his maiden at Saratoga, the McKinzie colt
won the Hopeful (G1) by a half-length and the Champagne (G1) by 2 3/4 on Oct.
5. This race will be his first time going two turns.
Race 10, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, 1 mile, turf
Based in England, New Century already has a North America
win to his credit. The Andrew Balding-trained Kameko colt won the Summer Stakes
(G1) going one mile last month at Woodbine. Aomori City, trained in England by
Charlie Appleby, is a Grade 2-winning Oasis Dream colt who finished fourth last
out in the Vincent O’Brien National (G1) at the Curragh. Coolmore’s Henri
Matisse was a close second in that race before trying the soft turf at
ParisLongchamp only to finish fifth in the Prix Lagardère (G1). Both Aomori
City and Henri Matisse will stretch to a mile for the first time.
