Wing Cam Carr is leaving the Tennessee basketball program after just a year and a half in Knoxville, KnoxNews Mike Wilson first reported and a Tennessee spokesperson confirmed to RTI.
The transfer portal is not open until March 24 after the conclusion of the regular season. That means that Carr can not enter the transfer portal until after the end of the 2024-25 regular season. Carr can transfer to another school before then but will not be eligible to play until next season.
By leaving now and not playing in any more games this season, Carr bolsters his case to receive a medical redshirt for the 2024-25 season.
Carr played in just four games for Tennessee this season, averaging 4.8 points, 1.5 rebounds and one assist in 10.3 minutes per game.
The 6-foot-5 wing suffered a thumb injury in Tennessee’s win over Montana back in November. The original diagnosis was for Carr to miss four-to-six weeks with Tennessee hoping he would return to the court by the start of SEC play.
Depth continues to be an issue for Tennessee basketball this season. The Vols entered the season with just 11 players on scholarship. JP Estrella had season-ending foot injury late last month and now Carr is leaving the program.
That leaves Tennessee with just nine healthy scholarship players with one of those players being true freshman guard Bishop Boswell who is playing just 3.9 minutes per game this season. Darlinstone Dubar was competing with Carr for wing minutes off the bench and his role will increase the most from Carr’s departure.
Tennessee will likely role with a core eight-player rotation that includes Zakai Zeigler, Chaz Lanier, Jahmai Mashack, Igor Milicic Jr, Felix Okpara, Jordan Gainey, Cade Phillips and Dubar.
Rick Barnes’ 10th Tennessee team is currently ranked No. 1 in the AP Poll after jumping out to an 11-0 start to the season. The Vols have six wins over power five opponents and ranked wins over Baylor and Illinois.
Tennessee is back in action on Monday night where they’re facing MTSU in its penultimate non conference matchup of the regular season. Tipoff between the Vols and Blue Raiders is at 7 p.m. ET at Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center. The SEC Network is broadcasting the game.
