FRISCO, Texas — The journey endured by Brandon Aubrey to get to this point in athletic career is one someone will one day write a book about. Oh, wait, that’s already occurred, with the Dallas Cowboys’ superstar kicker set to release a children’s book in 2025, and on the heels of yet another historic NFL accomplishment.
Having been named to this season’s Pro Bowl, Aubrey becomes the first kicker in the history of the league to earn the honor in both of his first two seasons as a pro — a mindblowing achievement when considering the boots that have graced a more than 100-year-old league.
“It’s a big honor to be named to the Pro Bowl by peers, fans and the media,” said Aubrey, also admitting the historic component of it hasn’t sunk in yet. “It means a lot to me. It’s a really cool honor and something I don’t take lightly. I’m gonna keep working to hopefully make that three.”
This year’s appearance at the annual event will be markedly different for Aubrey, and largely because he’s fully healthy going into it.
Last year, he had an emergency onset of appendicitis, but refused to let that stop him from experiencing his first-ever Pro Bowl.
“I was kind of bedridden,” he explained. “The doctor wanted to pull it out before I went to the Pro Bowl but it obviously would’ve meant I couldn’t go. So I just took some antibiotics and tried to muscle through it, but I didn’t get much time to enjoy it since I was pretty sick. I’m excited to get back and actually enjoy it.”
That said, would he do things differently if given the chance?
“No,” he said, emphatically.
And speaking of the aforementioned children’s book, Aubrey gave insight into what it means for him to be able to put his own personal journey into words, a road that continues to reward him for persevering through twists and turns en route to eventually becoming the most dangerous weapon on the Cowboys’ roster.
“That was just kinda getting the chance to think back and flesh out my story,” he said. “The season’s a whirlwind and you don’t have a lot of time to reflect. That forced me to sit back and reflect on everything that made me successful, and what made me unsuccessful with the failure at the MLS level. The reflection was pretty cool.
“My wife actually played a big part in writing the book with me and hearing her point of view as it fleshed out was pretty cool as well. It’s cool for me because I always looked up to athletes as a kid and took their words to heart, and actions and body language, so to have an impact on kids — hopefully, I can be a positive role model and put out a story that someone can attach themselves to and work hard to achieve their dreams.”
It’s safe to say the book will resonate with many young minds, and potentially some older ones as well, seeing as struggle doesn’t care about age, environment or circumstance.
Aubrey is one who understands this quite well, and it’s also helped keep him, mentally, where his feet are through the entirety of his first two seasons in the NFL.
“It’s never about your past in the NFL,” he said. “It’s about what you’re doing today, and things change quickly.”
They can indeed, and as Aubrey heads into the offseason as a restricted free agent, his first meaningful round of contract talks will soon commence.
When asked if his long term plan is to become the best kicker in the history of football, his answer was the definition of what Aubrey embodies: the present.
“No, I just wanna be here next year,” he said.
Even his answers split the uprights.
