According to Boomer Esiason, the landscape of the NFL is going to look vastly different as soon as three years from now.
During his Friday morning WFAN radio show with co-host Gregg Giannotti, news broke about the Miami Dolphins being the home team for a 2025 NFL game in Madrid, prompting Esiason to tease more information about the league’s continued global expansion.

“I’m gonna tell you right now, I’m gonna say by 2029, maybe 2028…there will be an NFL division in Europe,” Esiason said. “There are going to be four teams over there, there’s gonna be an NFL Europe division, you watch.”
Esiason confirmed the four organizations making up this NFL Europe division will be expansion teams, not existing ones, meaning the league will be fielding 36 rosters. “There are so many billionaires out there right now that want a piece of this,” Esiason added. “It’s gonna happen.”
Commissioner Roger Goodell joined Bloomberg’s The David Rubenstein Show Friday morning and confirmed the league is exploring the idea of expanding with a division overseas, but noted there are still logistics that need to be figured out. It seemed like something that was still a ways off. But even more than the concept of an NFL Europe division, it’s Esiason’s estimated timeline that is really surprising. Having four new franchises ready to kick off in Europe within three or four years is probably a lot sooner than anyone expected.
Giannotti attempted to press Esiason on whether or not he liked the idea of putting four teams in Europe, but the former longtime analyst for The NFL Today on CBS spent minutes circling around his answer, only focusing on the business benefits.
“It would also create another TV package,” Esiason added. “You understand that, right?”
Esiason later joked that maybe Boomer and Gio will eventually be sent to Europe to broadcast a live American football show for Netflix. Maybe that was an unaffiliated thought, or maybe it was a sort of Easter egg. One year ago, Esiason predicted an NFL-Netflix partnership for Christmas Day which proved to be true. The NFL wants to carve out a larger package for Netflix, and maybe adding a four-team division in Europe is a way for that to happen.
