SOUTH CAROLINA (WCIV) — The Boeing Company announced they’ll be reducing its workforce in South Carolina by approximately 220 jobs. Most of the layoffs are expected to begin on Jan. 17, 2025 and bumping rights do not exist, according to a release from the company.

The majority of the layoffs in the Palmetto State will be at its North Charleston location with 211 jobs set for elimination.

Charleston will lose five jobs, Beaufort is set to lose two, Moncks Corner will lose one, and Columbia will lose one, according to documents provided to News 4.

The job cuts in South Carolina are part of broader layoffs within Boeing across the country. The company announced their job cuts will eventually total about 17,000, the AP reported.

Boeing said Monday it has laid off 2,199 in Washington as part of its plan to cut about 10% of its workforce in the coming months as the aerospace manufacturer works to recover from financial and regulatory woes.

A machinist strike that lasted nearly two months also greatly strained the company’s finances. CEO Kelly Ortberg said in October the strike did not cause the layoffs as it was a result of overstaffing.
