CASTLE ROCK — With Day 1 of the 2024 BMW Championship in the books, here’s a look at a few of the top wow moments and a few of the top ugly moments from Castle Pines Golf Club.
• Si Woo Kim, who finished the day 3 under par, had the crowd roaring on the fourth hole when the South Korean chipped in from the rough 30 feet from the hole. The ball was on line the entire time, taking two short hops before rolling into the hole for a birdie.
• On the fourth hole, Hideki Matsuyama’s fast start to the tournament continued when the Japanese fan favorite drained a 74-foot birdie putt to get him to 3-under par. Matsuyama’s putt went downhill from the top tier of the green to the bottom, with perfect pacing.
• Akshay Bhatia got his tournament off to a flashy start with an impressive chip-in out of the sand on the first hole. Bhatia was 67 feet out, but his shot was right on line and hit the flag stick before dropping in. He finished the day at even par.
• On the brutal 10th hole, Thomas Detry’s drive sailed 393 yards into the right rough, where it bounced off a fan. The fan was unhurt as it appeared to careen off a shoe. Detry recovered for bogey, one of five bogeys in his round that had him at even par.
• Local favorite Wyndham Clark stands at even par. He double-bogeyed the 10th and 15th holes after hitting into water on both. It didn’t get much better on the 17th, where his third shot in the rough just off the green went two feet, and his fourth shot went across the green and landed in the beach.
• Jason Day, one of two players in the field (along with Adam Scott) who also competed in The International, had a rough go of it in his return to Castle Pines. He’s tied for last at 6 over par. That included a pair of double bogeys on the fourth and sixth holes.
