The February 6th NBA Trade Deadline is fast approaching and the Portland Trail Blazers remain well below a boil, but still simmering, on the trade rumor stove. Today a couple of national writers mentioned Portland players in trade speculation, both centers.
Coley Cleary of HoopsHype cites the Golden State Warriors as a possible destination for Robert Williams III.
The Warriors have continued their due diligence on the trade market and inquired about potential frontcourt upgrades, including Nikola Vucevic, John Collins, Jonas Valanciunas, and Robert Williams, league sources told HoopsHype. Conversely, the chances of Golden State acquiring previously reported wing targets such as Jimmy Butler and Cam Johnson have decreased, sources said.
The article also establishes a potential price for the backup center.
Valanciunas and Williams are expected to command multiple second-round picks on the trade market, according to various NBA executives who’ve spoken to HoopsHype.
Williams has averaged 6.6 points and 5.0 rebounds in 16.5 minutes per game over 12 appearances for the Blazers this season while shooting 71.7% from the field.
Meanwhile Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report published an article covering possible trade deadline plans for every team in the league. Of the Blazers, he says:
The Blazers drafted their future center, Donovan Clingan, but he may not be ready for a full-time starting role. Portland may wait until the summer to move a higher-salaried player like Deandre Ayton. [Jerami] Grant’s contract and age limit his market. [Anfernee] Simons is due a new salary soon (expiring 2025-26), so he may be the right player to deal.
But Portland could do nothing this deadline and just wait for the offseason. It’s a franchise willing to trade but not desperate to do so.
But just as interestingly, Pincus speculates that the Hawks could be interested in moving Clint Capela’s expiring contract for Ayton.
The Hawks could be a dark-horse candidate to land Brandon Ingram or Deandre Ayton, but competing executives note that whatever long-term move they make, they’ll stay under the luxury tax.
Ayton is averaging 13.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game for Portland in 29.8 minutes per over 29 appearances this season.
