BLEAV in Bills: Looking ahead to the season finale in New England
Sal Maiorana and Adam Benigni are joined by Matt Parrino to discuss several topics ahead of Bills vs. Patriots.
ORCHARD PARK — Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott already indicated that linebacker Terrel Bernard will not be playing Sunday in New England due to a quad injury, but the good news he revealed Friday morning is that Bernard should be OK for next weekend’s AFC wild-card game.
“I feel pretty good about it,” McDermott said. “I asked the trainer (Nate Breske) and he feels good about it, so I think TB will be ready to go for next week.”
That’s obviously great news for a defense that needs its middle linebacker and signal caller on the field, given that their depth at the position is rookie Joe Andreessen.
McDermott also said that he hopes defensive backs Taylor Rapp, Damar Hamlin and Cam Lewis, and wide receiver Curtis Samuel — who have all been listed as limited participants in practice this week — will be able to play Sunday, at least a little.
Samuel has missed the last two games and Hamlin the last three, while Rapp returned from a two-game absence last week against the Jets. Samuel is listed questionable while the other three do not have a designation which generally means they will be available.
The offensive line is a tricky spot because you can’t sit out all five players, but McDermott did say, “Our starting O-line will be dressed, but they will not be out there, ideally. A lot of those guys who have been busting their butts as backups all year long, we’re going to give them an opportunity to see what they can do.”
That would mean players like rookies Sedrick Van Pran-Granger and Tylan Grable, plus young veterans such as Richard Gouraige, Alec Anderson and Ryan Van Demark.
Also, the Bills announced that practice squad quarterback Mike White was signed to the 53-man roster, and linebacker Nicholas Morrow was released to make room. That means White can be the backup to starter Mitch Trubisky Sunday.
