There’s a brewing beef between Bill Belichick and Pro Football Talk.
It started Wednesday when the former New England Patriots coach took an unprompted shot at PFT, particularly the site’s creator Mike Florio.
During his regular appearance on ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show, Belichick was asked about the concerns that the coach was slow to hire staff since taking the North Carolina job.
“We’re all set. We’re full speed ahead,” Belichick said. “ Yeah, Pro Football Talk’s not a good source for me.”
Why the shot? It likely has to do with the ongoing rumors and speculation that Belichick could still return to the NFL this year.
Florio was among the media outlets to write about Belichick’s hiring process, noting that his lack of hires in Chapel Hill is “making people nervous” around the school.
Florio wasn’t the only reporter to publish something along those lines, or speculate that Belichick could be eyeing an NFL return.
Still, he’s the only one that Belichick called out. The shot was unprompted, as no specific media outlets had been mentioned in the conversation with McAfee.
Florio heard it. A little after the coach’s comments came out, PFT published a column titled “Bill Belichick won’t be reading this (but you should).”
His reaction to Belichick’s comments?
“Of course it’s not. Because from time to time we say things he doesn’t like,” Florio wrote.
The PFT columnist was undeterred by Belichick’s comments, suggesting that the coach finally signed his UNC contract only after it because “obvious” he couldn’t bolt for an NFL job.
Since he was introduced as the next coach of the Tar Heels back in December, Belichick has been adamant that he has no plans to leave for an NFL job. His GM, Michael Lombardi, backed that up by saying the story has “no legs.”
Still, the speculation continues. Much of that has to do with Belichick’s buyout dropping from $10 million to $1 million after June 1.
As things stand, 31 of the 32 NFL head coaching jobs are filled, with only the New Orleans Saints looking to make a hire. For now, it looks like Belichick is staying in Chapel Hill for 2024.
