Watch: Golden Gate football dominates Mariner in playoffs
The Titans scored seven touchdowns to down the Tritons 48-14 and earn their first playoff win in program history on Nov. 10, 2023.
Following his resignation as head football coach in 2023, Nick Bigica wanted Golden Gate to find someone who loved the program as much as he did.
“It’s not about the wins and the losses. It’s about the kids and the program,” Bigica said at the time.
After one year away, he’s returned to lead the Titans.
Bigica was hired as the program’s sixth head coach last week and will try to return Golden Gate back to county relevance after a 1-8 season under Nick Citro, who resigned after one season. Bigica becomes the third head coach in Collier County history to return to a school where he once coached, joining Lely’s Merv Ward (1984-94, 2000-02) and Naples’ Bob Bentley (1985-87, 1991-92). The Titans went 24-26 over his first stint from 2019-2023.
“It was some time away,” Bigica said. “I never really felt like it was a vacation. I still was part of the Golden Gate community the whole time. I still came to almost every sporting event. I helped coached soccer this year. Our soccer team won the district title. I try to be as much of the Golden Gate community as they would allow me to me. They were always very gracious to me.”
Bigica resigned following a historic 2023 season that included winning the CCAC title for the first time, along with winning the program’s first playoff game. But the 2023 season was also mired in controversy in part due to an investigation concluding he and former defensive coordinator P.J. Gibbs had improper contact with a Lely player’s mother which resulted in a six-game suspension for Bigica and a two-game suspension for Gibbs. Both coaches were allowed to work with the team at practice during the week but were suspended from game nights.
As Bigica looks to build his staff, he’ll have a longtime head coach alongside him in Rich Dombroski, who most recently was an assistant at Barron Collier before serving as Bonita Springs’ founding coach in the late 2010s.
“He brings a lot to the table,” Bigica said. “He’s got knowledge upon knowledge and has been coaching a lot longer than I have. The knowledge he brings is great, and he cares about kids and wants to be here… I love having ex-head coaches on staff. They understand what the job is. They’ll pick up slacking areas that other people may not understand. They understand how the game is played and what the job entails. They help make my life easier, and I think Rich is going to be very crucial into helping us become better.”
The Titans will get underway with a spring game on May 21, taking on another team that’s been building from the ground up in Aubrey Rogers. It’ll be a young group at Golden Gate, with over 50 freshmen and sophomores that’ll have to get acclimated to playing against upperclassmen.
“It’s almost like being back in 2019 again,” Bigica said. “I’m excited for the challenge. I love the process. I absolutely love the process and love building it. One of the most rewarding things to me is starting to build something and building it into something great that we did once upon a time, and I’m hoping to do that all over again. I just absolutely love that process more than anything.”
