Biff Poggi is back with the Michigan football program.
The university announced Monday that the 65-year-old has been hired as associate head coach under Sherrone Moore. Poggi held same position under Jim Harbaugh in 2021 and 2022, helping turn around the program after the Wolverines finished 2-4 in 2020.
Poggi left Michigan to become the head coach at Charlotte but was fired during the 2024 season. He went 6-16 in two years with the 49ers.
“I am thrilled to officially be back in Ann Arbor!” Poggi posted on social media Monday night. “This will always be my Football Home. So thankful for Sherrone Moore, Warde Manuel and Doug Gnodtke, all old friends. Sometimes you don’t know what a special place this is until you have been somewhere else. #GOBLUE. A special thanks to my son Henry, who was a great player here and introduced our family to OUR SCHOOL.”
Poggi, whose son was a fullback for the Wolverines from 2013-17, also served as an analyst for Michigan in 2016 before returning to the high school ranks. He transformed Baltimore St. Frances Academy into a national powerhouse while producing dozens of Division 1 players from 2017-20. The Wolverines have landed a handful of recruits from St. Frances since Poggi’s tenure there, including Blake Corum, Derrick Moore and Nikhai Hill-Green.
Several players lauded Poggi’s mentorship when he was in Ann Arbor and credited him for helping reshape the culture after Harbaugh’s worst season at Michigan.
“Biff has been a tremendous asset to our University of Michigan Football program, providing support and mentorship to our coaching staff and players,” Harbaugh said when Poggi was hired by the 49ers. “He has a great football mind, knows how to prepare a team during the week and on game day, and is a coach that aims to change the lives of his players in a positive way. Biff is a trusted agent and known friend, and I know that his leadership and ability to develop a team-first culture will be a huge asset to the Charlotte 49ers.”
Moore will be hoping Poggi can have a similar effect after the Wolverines finished 8-5 in his first season as head coach. Less than a week after getting fired by Charlotte, Poggi visited Ann Arbor for Michigan’s 50-6 win over Northwestern on Nov. 23, which kicked off a three-game win streak to end the season.
