WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – The heart of the 2024-25 high school basketball season kicks off after the holiday break, and one team on a hot streak heading into the post-break schedule is the Beaver River Beavers Boys Basketball team.
After falling in their season opener at West Canada Valley, the Beavers have reeled off 7 straight wins to sit at 7-1 overall, 3-0 in Frontier League C division play.
Beavers coach Zac Lehman is happy with the overall effort of his team early on in the season.
“Honestly, it’s a shared effort. Everybody on this team is unselfish, they play hard, and they play well together. There’s not a lot of issues. I’m just really proud of these guys kind of playing together and working really hard together,” said Zac Lehman.
The Beavers are led by senior guard Kade Schneider, who is averaging just over 26 points a game, and fellow senior frontcourt mate Carter Rice, who is averaging 15 points a contest.
That has translated into the Beavers being among the top scoring teams in Section 3. Scoring 60 or more points in 7 of their 8 games this season.
The players say that, along with team unity, have been the keys to Beaver Rivers’s solid start.
“Our shooting has been well. We’re shooting over 50 times a game in the 2-point range. It’s also helping our passing is a lot better, getting open and creating shots for our guys,” said Kade Schneider.
“Keys been just like moving the ball around, just getting everyone good looks and just putting the ball in the hoop,” said Matthew Moore.
Lehman says his team will have to be at the top of their game come Sectional time if they hope to make a run in the post-season
“There’s some really good teams in the C division in Section 3. That restructuring has about 27 teams I think in the C division. So Cooperstown, Tully, and Hamilton are all very good. We’re gonna really need to put together a team effort to go into those games throughout the season,“ said Lehman.
And with a deeper bench than in years past, look for Beaver River to contend for a Section 3 title this season.
