At least we’re not talking about the Bears’ first overall pick this year.
It’s been quite the few years for the Bears and their draft picks. Whether it was trading up for Justin Fields, fleecing the Panthers (although is it still as much of a fleece as we thought??), or taking Caleb Williams first overall last year, the Bears have been *the* team of the draft through most of the Ryan Poles era. Which is almost as good as winning games!
They’re only picking ninth this year, which kinda feels low for a team that only managed to win five games this season. But any top-10 pick comes with a little arbitrary excitement, and CBS Sports found a way to get a click out of every single person who’s ever been apart of Bears Twitter. In their latest mock draft, which was published on Monday morning, CBS has the Bears taking Boise State star running back Ashton Jeanty with their first round pick. The photoshopped hype videos are already being created as we speak.
“How about a scenario in which the Cowboys don’t draft Ashton Jeanty … and Ben Johnson and the Bears land the premier running back in this class?”
I mean, sure! Whatever. Jeanty is not only one of the biggest names in this year’s draft, but he also happens to be, you know, a transcendent talent and one of the best running backs that college football has ever seen. And now that Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry made running backs cool again, the idea of using a top 10 pick at that position doesn’t seem so out of touch anymore.
I don’t know how any of this will turn out – only internet draft experts truly know the future – but as far as fun storylines go, Jeanty on a Ben Johnson-coached offense run by Caleb Williams sounds pretty great. And can you imagine once the Bears realize that investing in the offensive line is a good idea? The sky’s going to be the limit. I wonder if DJ Moore will give Jeanty his number or not? CBS Sports didn’t answer that question for me.
During a recent episode of PFT Live, I said I was considering switching allegiances from the Vikings to the Eagles, if only
