The Chicago Bears are leaving no stone unturned when it comes to their search for a new head coach. They’ve cast a wide net that’s reached 20 candidates of various backgrounds, including former head coaches, ascending coordinators, college coaches and even current head coaches.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Bears called the Pittsburgh Steelers to see if they could potentially try to trade for head coach Mike Tomlin. Chicago’s request was denied as Tomlin has a no-trade clause in his contract. Schefter noted there was at least one other team besides the Bears that inquired about a potenital trade for Tomlin, but they were also shot down.
During his end-of-year press conference, general manager Ryan Poles didn’t rule out potentially trading for a head coach.
“We’ll look at all avenues to get the best coach here,” Poles said earlier this month.
While Tomlin isn’t an option, the Bears appear to have some early frontrunners for their vacant head coach job — Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy.
