The BNP Paribas Open announced more wild-card entries on Friday afternoon. On the men’s side, Nishesh Basavareddy has joined the main-draw field along with Reilly Opelka and Tristan Boyer.
Basavareddy looks poised to be one of the ATP Tour’s breakout stars in 2025. The 19-year-old American successfully qualified in Brisbane, reached the Auckland semifinals as a qualifier, and took a set off Novak Djokovic in round one of the Australian Open. Basavareddy is Newport Beach native and former college tennis star at Stanford, so he figures to be a crowd favorite at the Indian Wells Masters.
Opelka was going to enter the Indian Wells main draw with a protected ranking, but he can now save it for future use after being given a wild card. The 6’11” American is healthy and in resurgent form this season following an absence of almost two years. Opelka finished runner-up in Brisbane, advanced one round at Melbourne Park, and was a quarterfinalist in Dallas.
Like Basavareddy, Boyer is a California native (Altadena), Stanford product (although they were never on the same team, as Boyer is four years older), and Australian Open headline-maker. While his hometown was being ravaged by the wildfire outbreak, the world No. 113 qualified for the main draw in Melbourne and advanced to the second round.
Additional WTA wild cards went to Sloane Stephens, Belinda Bencic, Iva Jovic, Alycia Parks, Bernarda Pera, and Robin Montgomery. Petra Kvitova, who–like Bencic–is making a comeback following the birth of her first child, received a wild card earlier this month.
The BNP Paribas Open in Palm Springs is the first Masters 1000 event on the men’s side in 2025 and it is a Premier 1000 tournament for the women.
