WHEELING — The Barnesville High boys captured the annual Mid-Ohio Valley League Golf Tournament played in the brutal heat Wednesday at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Golf Course.

Coach Jerry Robinson’s Shamrocks finished with a 303-stroke total to take top honors, with Monroe Central as the runner-up with a 330 score. Buckeye Local (337), Caldwell (343), Shadyside (371), River (379) and Frontier (405) rounded out the scoring of schools with full teams.

Individually, Brady Gallagher of Barnesville was the MOVL medalist with a 72 total, two shots better than teammate Hayden Treadway’s 74.

Joining Barnesville’s Gallagher and Treadway earning All-MOVL honors were Kamden Kinyo of Buckeye Local (76), Graham Spence of Barnesville (77), Caedyn Silva of Monroe Central (78), Cameron Sidwell of Caldwell (79), Dierkis Vincent of Caldwell (82), James Williams of Monroe Central (83), Caleb Griffith of Monroe Central (83) and Adam Blackwell of Buckeye Local (83).

On the girls’ side, the only two schools fielding full teams were Caldwell and River, with the Lady Redskins prevailing, 460-479.

Barnesville’s Kennedy Little earned medalist honors with an 80 while joining her on the All-MOVL Team were Miley Kiggans of Frontier (96), Calla Conaway of Shadyside (96) and Ambie Grimes of River (103).

Brooke 204, Wheeling Central 205

WELLSBURG — Two girls golf teams went head-to-head Wednesday at Highland Springs, with the Brooke Bruins edging out Wheeling Central by the thinnest of margins– merely one stroke separating the two teams.

Brooke got a cluster of good outings from Grace Shepard, who shot a 46, Savannah Alcantara, who shot a 48, and Ellie McDonald, who shot a 49. A few strokes back from them, two players tied for the final qualifying spot for the Bruins, Sophia Wilkerson and Kayleigh Suddoth each tallying a 61.

Maddie Potts continued her spree of early-season medalist honors, leading the Maroon Knights while finishing the Par 35 in 39 strokes.

VOLLEYBALL

Tigers Tame Red Devils

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Shadyside picked up a road victory on Wednesday over St. Clairsville, prevailing 25-7, 25-17, 18-25, 25-17.

Ali Weatherson was pivotal in the Tigers’ effort, supplying 33 assists while also collecting 12 digs and serving two aces.

Josey Greenwood led the team with 16 digs.

Aubrey Nippers had 12 kills, 12 digs and an impressive five aces. Sophie Boltz had nine kills of her own. Ella Mercer had two blocks, tops on the Tigers.

Williamstown Sweeps

Visiting Blue Eagles

WILLIAMSTOWN — Magnolia took a loss to the Yellow Jackets in their season opener Wednesday evening, Williamstown sweeping their opponent 25-23, 25-16, 25-21.

Jessa Anderson and Sienna McKeever each racked up 11 kills for Magnolia. Anderson also led the team in digs with 27. Liberto Aly Stillwagoner had 20 digs of her own.

Sidney Knight fed her teammates to the tune of 26 assists. She also had two aces.

Steubenville 2 Beaver Local 2

Daniel Aguilera scored twice as Big Red (2-0-1) and the Beavers battled to a draw.

Ethan Wood had both goals for the Beavers.

Steubenville hosts Linsly Saturday at 4 p.m.

GIRLS GOLF

John Marshall Tops Field

The Monarchs won a quadrangular match against Wheeling Central, Wheeling Park and Brooke. They had a score of 185, which was five shots better than the Maroon Knights. The Patriots finished at 195, with Brooke checking in at 207.

Wheeling Central’s Maddie Potts was medalist with a 39.

John Marshall was led by Peyton Jones with a 43. Jocelyn Blatt carded a 45, Morgan Messner a 46 and Alexis Thayer a 51.

Alicia Harvath paced Wheeling Park with a 47.

Brooke’s Ellie McDonald led the Bruins with a 46.

Linsly Edges Wheeling Park

Adam Gill shot an 18-hole total of 72 as the Cadets held off the Patriots, 330-335, on the Jones Course.

Andrew Pennybacker was the low man for Wheeling Park with a 76.
