Czech tennis star Barbora Krejcikova has publicly criticised “unprofessional” comments made about her physical appearance by prominent tennis journalist Jon Wertheim. The two-time Grand Slam champion did not hold back, expressing her disappointment at what she described as an “unprofessional” and “disrespectful” approach to sports commentary. The comments, which were inadvertently broadcast live on the Tennis Channel, quickly drew criticism from fans and have raised questions about the conduct of journalists covering women’s sports.
The incident took place during the live broadcast of the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, when Wertheim, who was appearing on the Tennis Channel via video link, made a comment about Krejcikova’s appearance in an apparent attempt at humor. Unaware that the comment was airing, Wertheim remarked, “What do you think I am? Barbora Krejcikova. Look at the forehead when Krejcikova and [Zheng Qinwen] take the court.” The remark left fans frustrated, with some expressing their disapproval on social media, questioning the lack of professionalism and respect in Wertheim’s statement.
Krejcikova took to social to respond to the comment, posting a strong message on Twitter (now X) that called out the incident. “You might have heard about the recent comments made on Tennis Channel during the WTA Finals coverage that focused on my appearance rather than my performance,” Krejcikova wrote. “As an athlete who has dedicated herself to this sport, it was disappointing to see this type of unprofessional commentary.”
The former World No. 2 acknowledged that this wasn’t the first time she had encountered such remarks in sports media but felt compelled to speak up on this occasion. She continued, “This isn’t the first time something like this is happening in the sports world. I’ve often chosen not to speak up, but I believe it’s time to address the need for respect and professionalism in sports media.”
Krejcikova also voiced concern that these types of remarks take away from the essence of sport, distracting fans from the skill, dedication, and resilience that athletes bring to the court. “These moments distract from the true essence of sport and the dedication all athletes bring to the field,” she stated. “I love tennis deeply, and I want to see it represented in a way that honors the commitment we make to compete at this level.”
The tennis world has responded with mixed reactions. Many fans expressed their support for Krejcikova, commending her for addressing an issue that has become too familiar in the sports industry. Others await a formal response from Wertheim, who, as of now, has not commented on the incident.
Krejcikova has had a remarkable season, highlighted by her Wimbledon title and a semifinal finish at the WTA Finals. As she closes out the year ranked No. 13 globally, the Czech star’s accomplishments on the court stand as a testament to her focus and dedication.
