Shakib, who declared his intention to retire from Test cricket last year, has been making headlines for various controversies in recent months.
Shakib Al Hasan, the celebrated all-rounder and former captain of Bangladesh, is currently facing controversy after an arrest warrant was issued against him for a dishonored cheque at IFIC Bank, as reported by Cricbuzz on Sunday. Amidst political turmoil in Bangladesh, Shakib, who declared his retirement from Test cricket last year, has been embroiled in a number of scandals in recent months, including being accused in a murder case.
Shakib is presently residing overseas due to security fears after a student movement occurred in the nation. Ziadur Rahman, the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka, issued the arrest warrant.
Shahibur Rahman, an IFIC Bank Relationship Officer, filed the cheque fraud complaint against Shakib on December 15. Shakib was told by the court to show up in three days. According to the accusations, he failed to fulfil a promise to provide two checks totalling BDT 4,14,57,000, or approximately 41.4 million Tk. Three other people are also mentioned in the case.
Al Hasan Agro Farm Ltd., Shakib’s business, is also involved since it has taken out many loans from the Banani branch of IFIC Bank. These money were supposed to be used to pay back debts, but because there were not enough, the checks were not honoured.
In 2023, Shakib entered the political arena by joining the Awami League and successfully won the Magura-1 constituency.
The left-handed all-rounder last played for Bangladesh in September 2024 during a Test series against India. Although he has expressed a desire to play a farewell Test in Bangladesh, he has not been selected for the team since then.
Shakib has officially retired from T20Is, with his final match being at the T20 World Cup. His last appearance in professional cricket was during the Abu Dhabi T10 League, where he played for the Bangla Tigers.
