Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert will have three
opportunities to win the Grade 2, $215,000 Starlet for an eighth consecutive
year when the race is run Saturday at Los Alamitos.
The race for seven 2-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles is being
offered at the Cypress, Calif., track for the 11th time after being run as the
Hollywood Starlet from 1981 to 2013 at Hollywood Park.

The Starlet, which will award 10-5-3-2-1 Kentucky Oaks (G1) qualifying points to the top five finishers, is the eighth of nine races and has a scheduled
post time of 7 p.m. EST.
Baffert, whose streak of Starlet victories includes Dream
Tree in 2017, Chasing Yesterday in 2018, Bast in 2019, Varda in 2020, Eda in 2021,
Faiza in 2022 and Nothing Like You last year, entered stablemates Tenma, Mawu
and Nooni.
Owned by Baoma Corp, Tenma will be seeking her third win in
four starts and her second graded victory.
The daughter of Nyquist and Tapit mare Amagansett was a
debut winner at Del Mar on Aug. 18. She returned 19 days later to edge Vodka
With a Twist by a nose to capture the Del Mar Debutante (G1).
Stretched to the Starlet distance in the Oak Leaf (G2) on
Oct. 5, the $850,000 purchase at the Ocala Breeders’ Sale auction in April had
to settle for third behind stablemates Non Compliant and Nooni. Tenma has
earned $249,000.
A Blame filly out of the Flatter mare Soul Singer, Mawu won
her debut by 3 1/4 lengths Oct. 6 for Baoma Corp before finishing third in the
Desi Arnaz on Nov. 16 at Del Mar. The $500,000 yearling buy has earned $44,400.
Nooni, who set a fast pace in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile
Fillies last month before tiring to finish sixth, has won twice in five starts
for Zedan Racing Stables. The daughter of Win Win Win and Union Rags mare
Unanimity has a bankroll of $208,400.
Vodka With a Twist, who is owned by a partnership that
includes Medallion Racing, Omar Aldabbagh, William Strauss, BlackRidge Stables and
Schwing Thoroughbreds, has been runner-up in three consecutive graded events.
In her most recent outing, she was defeated by 4 1/2 lengths by Immersive in
the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.
A daughter of Thousand Words and Sky Mesa mare Bourbon and a
Kiss, Vodka With a Twist has won 2 of 6 and banked $639,320. She will be trying
to provide trainer Phil D’Amato with his second Starlet win. He captured the
2015 renewal with Street Fancy.
Practical Dream will try two turns for the first time for
trainer Tim Yakteen after upsetting Silent Law in the Desi Arnaz. Owned by
Roger Beasley and Leslie and Pierre Amestoy Jr., the Practical Joke filly out
of In Excess mare Imforeal has won twice in three outings and earned $123,486.
Aunt Mo, an Uncle Mo filly out of Scat Daddy mare Kallio, stretched
successfully Nov. 10 at Del Mar, defeating maidens by nine lengths going one
mile. Trained by Peter Eurton for Abbondanza Racing, Roncelli Family Trust,
West Coast Stables, Neil Haymes and Strauss, Aunt Mo has banked $52,200 in
three races. She was supplemented for $7,500 to the Starlet.
Look Forward, another $7,500 supplement now trained by
Michael McCarthy, was a debut winner for owner Paul Reddam. The Bolt d’Oro
filly out of Into Mischief mare Troublesome prevailed at six furlongs over
favored No Bad Beats on Nov. 8, providing the late trainer Ben Cecil with his
final win. Cecil, 56, died Nov. 29 after a long battle with cancer.
The first post for Saturday’s card is 3:30 p.m. EST.
