CANTON, Ohio — Avon made history Thursday night by winning its first OHSAA football state title.

The Eagles (16-0), whose only other state final appearance was in 2011, had to get through Cincinnati Anderson (15-1) to do it at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton.

The Eagles, which last week played in their seventh state semifinal in the last eight years, finally got past Archbishop Hoban after five straight state defeats against the Knights. Anderson, which won its only state title in 2007 and was runner-up in 2008, defeated Big Walnut in last week’s semifinals.
