OSHKOSH, Wis. (WBAY) – As you do your holiday shopping, police have important tips so we don’t fall victim to crime this season.
Oshkosh police are reminding shoppers it’s a good start to not overload yourself with bags and purchases. It’s good to have a free hand.
Have your keys ready before leaving the store.
Be aware of your surroundings.
Never leave a building if you feel it’s unsafe.
Avoid taking multiple trips to the car. If you must leave gifts in the car, cover them with a blanket, and if you must make multiple trips consider moving your car to another part of the parking lot — to a person watching you, it’ll appear that you’re leaving and your boxes and bags are no longer a target.
Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason.
And always carry your cell phone with you.
Police say it’s important to shop during the way when possible, and avoid shopping alone as a safety precaution.
If you’re shopping at night, make sure you’re parking in well-lit areas and areas under video surveillance.
Just like anything this time of year, staying vigilant and extra cautious goes a long way.
